Program

‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’
27th and 28th June 2008, 9:00 pm, Festplatz Lobeda Overture
In Shakespeare’s fairy tale-like world wondrous creatures stumble from one love to the next, from one entanglement to another, finally towards marriage. This much loved comedy inspired Mendelssohn Bartholdy to compose his music that enchants the audience by creating a magical atmosphere. The Philharmonia Orchestra of Jena and guests will take the audience on a journey through this miraculous world.
‘The Tempest’ by William Shakespeare
10th to 13th July 2008, 9:30 pm, Theatervorplatz Theater
Prospero, the lawful duke of Miland, is overthrown by his brother Antonio. Twelve years later Prospero seeks revenge on his enemies: He raises a storm which causes the ship to run aground near an island. Shakespeare’s tale can be regarded as a ‘thought experiment’: while the island is situated geographically between Tunis and Naples, notionally it’s a no-man’s-land, representing a wishful picture. However, at the end of the play Prospero returns to Miland and becomes the duke.

She and her multi-lingual band will evoke a longing in your heart – it marks the highlight of the art of chansons.
Ida Sand
Thursday, 17th July 2008, 8:00 pm, Theatervorplatz Concert
Hailing from Sweden, Ida Sand is a remarkable blues and soul singer. Although she is from the far north, upon hearing her warm Gospel voice, one could be fooled into thinking she is a ‘real’ blues lady from the Southern states of the US. Together with her combo she interprets her own compositions as well as classics by Bill Whithers and Eurythmics.

With their debut ‘Betcha Bottom Dollar’ the 3 women, centering around Marcella Puppini, started a real Puppini-hysteria. Although they are only soul sisters, one cannot help but be hypnotised by this charming trio. The ladies, with their trademark red lips and close-harmony music, put on a first class postmodern vaudeville.

¡Cubanismo!
Friday, 25th July 2008, 8:00 pm, Theatervorplatz Concert
The musicians of Cubanismo, centred around the Cuban trumpeter Jesus Alemany, belong to a new era. Although they have grown up in Castro’s Cuba they have been taught by the world and its different musical styles. They mix various musical traditions such as Mardi Gras brass with r’n’b; play hours non-stop till even the audience is worn out. That’s what you call good Cuban music.

Caravan Palace
Thursday, 7th August 2008, 8:00 pm, Theatervorplatz Concert
The Parisian band Caravan Palace invented electro-swing, and we can’t thank them enough for it. They created a new sound that makes swing anything else but archaic by mixing it with electronic sounds that even got the managers of the music exhibition WOMEX screaming. One wouldn’t have thought that swing would be able to evoke such passionate emotions.

Trio Bravo+
Friday, 15th August 2008, 8:00 pm, Theatervorplatz Concert
This trio aren’t a trio literally but are in fact a quartet and a very classical one at that: a violin, bass, piano and drums. However, the music this quartet produces is anything but classical. They cross borders between disparate musical genres such as film music, klezmer, Eastern European compositions and occasionally even pop music. Not only are they successful musicians, they are also accomplished film composers.
Sandy Dillon
Saturday, 16th August 2008, 8:00 pm, Theatervorplatz Concert
The American singer Sandy Dillon belongs to those musicians who regard music as their primal urge. Without music she views herself as a lost soul; and she has experienced too many events in her life to just create pedestrian music. Her songs are bluesy, throaty hymns, melancholic punk elegies that are rooted deep in the American tradition of Bessie Smith, Billy Holiday and even Janis Joplin.
